Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) addresses the mental health needs of children, adolescents, and families suffering from the destructive effects of early trauma. The treatment is particularly sensitive to the unique problems of youth with post-traumatic stress and mood disorders resulting from sexual abuse, as well as from physical abuse, violence, or grief. Because the client is usually a child, TF-CBT often brings non-offending parents or other caregivers into treatment and incorporates principles of family therapy. For more information, see the National Traumatic Stress Network.
EMDR is a type of psychotherapy that helps alleviate the impact of traumatic experiences. Using EMDR has been very helpful for individuals who have struggled to overcome their trauma using other therapeutic approaches and not finding the relief they desire.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy has proven effective with many different types of mental health struggles. CBT engages in a process that helps an individual better understand how their past experiences may be affecting the way they view their current world. Individuals go through a process of “reframing” their thoughts and beliefs to healthier more productive ways of thinking about and processing their experiences.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy is a type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy specifically designed to help those dealing with experiencing intense emotions. Through this process, individuals can find a better understanding of themselves and their emotions and how to manage them.
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a short-term, goal-focused, evidence-based therapeutic approach that incorporates positive psychology principles and practices. Through SFBT, clients change by constructing solutions rather than focusing on problems. In the most basic sense, SFBT is a hope-friendly, positive emotion-eliciting, future-oriented vehicle for formulating, motivating, achieving, and sustaining desired behavioral change.
Exposure Response Prevention therapy has become the "gold standard" for treating anxieties, phobias, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). It has also been effective in treating eating disorders. In ERP, clients are carefully guided through a process of confronting thoughts, images, objects, and situations that cause anxiety while learning to work through potential discomfort without responding to the trigger with compulsive behavior.
